The Daintree Rainforest is surrounded by big and small trees that block out the sunlight from shrubs, ferns, and herbs that grow on the rainforest floor. Trees such as the Daintree Fan Palm and Banana Tree Leaf provide protection against sunlight for those under them. The giant of the rainforest is the Blue Quandon. It grows tall with large leaves and can be recognized by the blue fruits it produces. A weird and kind of scary plant is known as the Strangler Fig. It is not like your normal tree that grows independently. The Strangler Fig envelops a "host" tree from the top to fight for sunlight. In the whole process, the "host" trees life is slowly being taken away and soon dies leaving the Strangler Fig with a hollow center.
Cauliflory are fruits and flowers that grow on the trunks of different trees. This is caused by pollination from birds and bees. Although some fruits are edible, there also fruits like the Burrawang Palm which produce highly toxic seeds and should be avoided at all costs. Other plants that should be avoided is the wait-a-while palm which are covered all over in spikes that can tear through anything in its way. These vines can be spotted dangling on trees or the rainforest floor. Another plant that should be avoided is the Stinging Tree. Its large leaves may look harmless but they are covered with thousands of microscopic pricks that stick to your skin when touched and will cause itching and stinging. If you do happen to touch it then apply vinegar to the spot to relieve the itching but it is best to go to the nearest hospital for stinging.
The Daintree Rainforest is home to 13 of the world's 19 primitive flowering species. Many rare flora species can be found deep into the rainforest.
